UCONN still No. 1 but California Golden Bears Move Up
The Connecticut Huskies are the undisputed No. 1 team in the NCAA women’s basketball polls, but Cal have made a move.
The top ten did not change in Week 8 of the NCAA women’s basketball season. Connecticut remain No. 1 as of December 26th and all other teams remained where they were last week. UCONN consolidated their top position with a win over Ohio State University, a team that dropped down a little. The Huskies are now 11-0 on the season, they have wins over both No. 2 Notre Dame, and No. 3 Baylor, and UCONN will prepare for a game on New Year’s Day at the University of Central Florida.
A lesser-known team in this season’s women’s hoops may be starting to make a bit of a name for themselves. The California Golden Bears posted three wins over the last week, one against Southern Miss, one at Oklahoma, and another at Arkansas State. The win over the Sooners was a victory over a ranked team on their home court. Meanwhile the wins over Southern Miss and Arkansas State involved huge spreads. The three results combined catapulted the Golden Bears into the Top 25. At 12-0, they are currently the No. 21 team in the nation with room for improvement.
This week coming up Cal have two away games, one against Arizona on December 29th and another against Arizona State on January 1st. If Cal win the first game then the game against State is one for their fans to get excited for. Currently, ASU are the 18th-ranked team in the nation. If Cal can topple the Sun Devils on their home court, then the Golden Bears would surely improve to at least that ranking. However, realistically Cal might do better than that as a road win is taken to prove a lot in college sports. If the Golden Bears go 2-0 this upcoming week, don’t be surprised to see them somewhere between 14th to 16th on January 2nd.
Other big movers in the rankings saw Virginia Tech jump up four spots. They only beat Radford last week, however VT are 12-0 on the season. Undefeated records are starting to become more and more impressive as teams get the mid-points of their schedules. Besides UCONN, VT, and Cal, other undefeated teams in the Top 25 include West Virginia at 12-0, Mississippi State at 13-0, and Maryland at 12-0. The team with the worst record in the Top 25 right now is 9-4 Syracuse.
