UCONN Huskies beat Baylor Bears in College Hoops

I’m thinking that UCONN will overtake top spot when the women’s rankings update, provided the Huskies win this weekend.

The Connecticut Huskies defeated the Baylor Bears on Thursday night in what was a big game in women’s college hoops. The 3rd-ranked Huskies, following an escape on the road on Monday at Florida State, hosted the No. 2 ranked Bears from Storrs. The final score was 72-61 for Connecticut, a win that should put the Huskies into top spot on Monday in consideration of how the other results went.

Connecticut’s win was the program’s 77th straight and it improved them to 2-0 on the season. With two quality wins, it’s fair to say that the post-Breanna Stewart era is off to a great start. Freshman Crystal Dangerfield was huge off the bench for the Huskies on Thursday night. She tallied a total of 30 minutes of playing time despite not starting the game and she scored 19 points in the outing on 8 for 14 shooting, including 3 for 5 from behind the arc.

UCONN and Baylor weren’t the only top teams scheduled for Thursday night. Top-ranked Notre Dame also hosted a game, one where they played unranked Green Bay. The Irish won the game, however they only posted a four-point spread at home 71-67. That they posted such a close result, in a game they hosted, and against a peripheral team probably won’t help them that much when it comes to the AP Polls. That the No. 2 Baylor Bears lost guarantees that they won’t be moving up so you have to think that the No. 3 Huskies are the team that will be.

Commentator Rebecca Lobo offered a couple of takeaways from the game. From her verified Twitter account she said that the Huskies looked “like a completely different team on the defensive end than they did Monday versus Florida State.” She also felt that the Bears were a team that would improve over the course of the season: “Baylor is going to be so much better in March. Final Four caliber team. This season is going to be so much fun to watch.”

Next up for UCONN is a road game as they head out to LSU this weekend (Nov 20th, 2:30pm ET). They will need that win in order to grab top spot in the rankings on Monday. Baylor, who are now 2-1 on the season, have what should be a dunk this weekend against Mississippi Valley State University (Nov 20th, noon ET).
