NCAA Softball : Top 5 Moments of Postseason Play
Our top five NCAA softball plays you didn’t want to miss.
1. Oklahoma wins their second title in four years
Naturally the Sooners get the number one spot. Head Coach Patty Gasso has done a tremendous job with her program. Gasso is very successful when it comes to recruiting and developing her players. This past year for the second time in a row, OU received Big 12 Player of the Year, Pitcher of the year, Freshman of the year, Defensive Player of the year, and Coach of the year. Paige Parker staying strong through the tournament earned the final win of the season pitching a complete game. The Sooners defeated Alabama, Michigan, LSU and Auburn en route to their title.
2. Georgia walks off against #1 Florida to advance to WCWS
Watching Georgia pull off a sweep against the #1 team and doing it walk off style is always something a fan wants to see. Senior Kaylee Puailoa was the hero in the bottom of the seventh sending a two run shot over the centerfield wall. Puailoa had a very solid four-year career with the Bulldogs, and that hit will go down in UGA history. Georgia started with a win against Florida State in the World Series, but then lost two straight games to SEC opponents Auburn and LSU.
3. Florida’s Kelsey Stewart steals home at the Gainesville Regional
This is a play that not many people ever get to witness. During the fourth inning of the final game in the regional, UCF’s Kristi Merritt drew a bases loaded walk which allowed the runner at third to score. As the pitcher had her back to home plate, Stewart followed the runner scoring from third base and jogged into score. The game ended in a 8-0 win over Central Florida which advanced them to the Super Regional. UF had a successful year including, an SEC title, four All Americans and earned the National #1 seed in the tournament.
4. Auburn’s Historic run throughout the Tournament
This is the best season of Auburn softball in program history. Their historic run included breaking the record for number of wins, winning their second SEC Tournament in two years, and making it to the WCWS Title game for the first time in program history. Along with their remarkable season, the Tigers were on the highlight reel throughout the postseason. The reel showed game two of the WCWS in the top of the sixth where Senior Tiffany Howard robbed OU of a homerun that would have put them up by two runs. In the same game, Senior Emily Carosone hit a walk off grand slam that tied up the series to 1-1 with Oklahoma to force a third game. The Tigers are on a rise to becoming a powerhouse in Division 1 softball.
5. Army infielder Kasey McCravey jumps over Lehigh’s catcher to score
Even though this happened during Patriot League Tournament play, this play had to be included in my top moments. McCravey made an unbelievable acrobatic hop over the Lehigh catcher that allowed her to score. That play put the Black Knights to a 3-1 lead over Lehigh that advanced them to the Patriot League title. Army ended up falling to Boston University in the final.
