Minjee Lee wins for second time this season
Final round play of the Blue Bay LPGA at Hainan Island, China was a battle between three players. Ariya Jutanugarn, Jessica Korda and Minjee Lee separated themselves from the pack with Minjee Lee coming out on top by one over Korda and two over Jutanugarn. The win was the second this season for Lee and the third of the LPGA career for the 20-year old from Australia.
Minjee Lee, whose previous victory this season was at the Lotte Championship in April, started with a birdie on the opening hole. After seven straight pars, she birdied the ninth to go to 13-under par. Lee followed with very solid play for much of the back nine, recording seven straight pars. A bogey on the 17th dropped her back to 12-under, but she secured the win with a birdie on the par-five 18th.
Jessica Korda started the day at 11-under par and was a non-factor through the first ten holes with nine pars and a bogey. She made a run on there next five holes with two birdies before a costly bogey on 16. Korda birdied the 18th but finished at 12-under par, one shot short of a playoff.
Ariya Jutanugarn, winner of five events this season, was solid for most of the round, but costly bogeys on the first and last prevented her from forcing a playoff or winning outright. In between the hiccups on the first and last, Jutanugarn recorded four birdies and 14 pars.
Finishing seven shots behind Minjee Lee and tied for sixth were Pornanong Phatlum and Caroline Masson. Charlie Hull finished at five-under par and sole possession of sixth place. Notables include Brooke Henderson, who finished at three-under par and Michelle Wie, who had her best finish of the season, a tie for 10th at one-under par.
The LPGA heads to Malaysia for the Sime Derby LPGA on October 27. Jessica Korda, coming off an excellent week, is the defending champion.
