Charley Hull earns first LPGA tour win
With $500,000 and the Tour Championship at stake, scoring was excellent at the top of the leader board in Sunday’s final round in Naples, Florida. So Yeon Ryu, Jennifer Song, Beatrix Recari, Ariya Jutanugarn and Shanshan Feng all shot in the 60’s and finished in the top ten. No one could catch Charley Hull, who shot a blistering final round of 66 to finish 19-under par to claim the CME Group Tour Championship. The win was the first of Hull’s LPGA career in the final event of the 2016 season.
Hull started the final round at 13-under par and was methodical and effective, with a clean scorecard, featuring three birdies on the front, including the par-5 sixth. She ended the front nine with a three-under par 33. Charley Hull continued putting the pressure on the rest of the field with a birdie on the tenth and after five pars and a birdie, came home with a birdie on the par-5 17th and par at the last. The win improved Hull to 4th in the CME ranking and 29th in the Rolex rankings.
Finishing a shot back was So Yeon Ryu, who recorded seven birdies on the day, but costly bogeys on the third and par-5 17th kept Ryu out of a possible playoff with Hull. Jennifer Song of the United States finished in sole possession of third with a final round of 68 and 15-under par total. The performance was by far the best of the season for Song, who is ranked 93rd and had not finished in the top ten all season prior to the event.
Mo Martin, Beatriz Recari and Ariya Jutanugarn finished in a tie for fourth at 14-under par, five shots back. Rounding out the top ten was In Gee Chun, Shanshan Feng, Amy Yang, Brittany Lincicome and Lydia Ko. For Ko, she lead at the halfway point and was in a quest for her third straight CME Race to the Globe.
Other notables include Suzann Petterson, who finished tied for 13th, Cristie Kerr, tied for 22nd, Brooke Henderson, tied for 24th and Lexie Thompson, who was a non-factor all week and finished tied for 40th at two-under par.
