Carlota Ciganda wins Lorena Ochoa Invitational
The leader board was tight at the 35-player field at the Lorena Ochoa invitational with ten players finishing within three shots. Marina Alex shot the round of they day, posting a 66 to finish at ten-under par. No player could catch Carlota Ciganda, who completed a four day total of 13-under par with a round of 68. The win was the second of the season for Ciganda, who now has six professional wins worldwide.
Carlota Ciganda started the day at nine-under par, but quickly bolted to the top with a an eagle on the second, birdie on the third and sixth. She had a few hiccups over the next ten holes with two bogeys, but was solid the rest of the way with a birdies on the two par fives on the back nine to secure the victory. Ciganda has finished in the top ten in each of the past five events, including two victories.
Jodi Ewart Shadoff, Angela Sanford, Karine Icher, Sarah Jane Smith and Austin Ernst all finished two shots back at 11-under par. Marina Alex, Candie Kung and Chella Choi finished at 10-under par to round out the top 10.
Notables who finished well behind Ciganda include Paula Creamer at five-under par, Brooke Henderson at four-under, Michelle Wie at one-under and Anna Nordqvist, who finished 15 shots back at plus-two.
Lydia Ko, Ariya Jutanugarn, In Gee Chun, Shanshan Feng, Lexi Thompson and Sei Young Kim, who are the top six players in the Rolex Rankings, were not in the field this week.
The LPGA heads to Naples, Florida for the CME Group Tour Championship. The event, with a purse of two millions dollars, is the final official event of the 2016 season. Cristie Kerr, who was not in the field this week, is the defending champion.
