Anna Nordqvist Repeats at ShopRite Classic
Anna Nordqvist entered the ShopRite Classic looking to defend her championship from a year ago. After two rounds she sat at ten under par, in reach of claiming her first LPGA tour victory since last year’s ShopRite and her sixth LPGA victory overall.
Nordqvist started strong with a birdie on the first, third and fourth, surrounding a par at the second. Following three consecutive pars, Nordvist finished the front nine strong with birdies at nine and ten, going into the turn at 15 under par. Her back nine was unspectacular on a day when seven players shot five under par or better. But Nordqvist did enough, converting birdies on 12 and 16, with pars the rest of the way to finish at 17 under par. The seven under par 64 was tied for the second lowest round of the day and enough to repeat as ShopRite Classic champion.
Harukyo Nomura shot a 66 to finish a shot behind Nordqvist. Third round leader Karine Icher shot a 69 and finished three shots back. Cristina Kim, coming off a strong showing a week ago, shot a 65 and finished four shots behind Nordqvist. Annie Park had the round of the day with an eight under 63, while Brittany Lang and Mika Miyazato fired rounds of 64.
Nordqvist has three top-ten finishes on the LPGA this season and is 21st on the money list. At 28 years of age, she became the oldest player on tour to win an event this season, clearly indicating how youth has dominated this season.
Nordvist is playing her best golf of the year at the right time, as the tour heads to the Sahalee Country Club for the Women’s PGA Championship. Inbee Park, who was not in the field this week, is the defending champion.
