'Boyz n the Hood' director John Singleton remains in coma

The family for Singleton says the filmmaker will be taken off life support Monday, April 29, 2019, after suffering a stroke nearly two weeks ago.

Director John Singleton is on life support, according to TMZ, but his family is sharing conflicting information on whether or not the "Boyz n the Hood" director is in a medically-induced coma. "We want to thank all the doctors at Cedars Sinai for the impeccable care he received", the family said in a statement. Singleton suffered a stroke two weeks ago while staying at a Los Angeles hospital.

The site further stated that the Boyz N the Hood director "did not have any medical directives", hence the need for a conservatorship.

He was also the co-creator of the FX series "Snowfall", which depicted the dawn of the 1980s crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles.

Jordan Peele, the Oscar-winning "Get Out" and "Us" filmmaker, tweeted, "RIP John Singleton". "Having trouble finding enough words to share just what you mean to me".

Friends, fans and critics posted tributes to the director, remembering his work, including the 1993 film "Poetic Justice", which starred Tupac Shakur and Janet Jackson, the 2000 remake of "Shaft" and "2 Fast 2 Furious" in 2003.

"There are these stacks of (films by non-black filmmakers) where black people have had to say, "OK, at least they tried, '" he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018, adding that now blacks were making the films themselves". Regardless, there's much confusion regarding this story floating around Twitter at the moment, but Singleton remains in critical condition at the very least.

"John was such a supernova in his youth that we forget that he was only beginning to fully assert his gifts as a director", his family's statement read. The family also thanked everyone who showed their love and offered their prayers for John Singleton during this time.
