North Korea billed US $2m for Otto Warmbier's hospital care – report

He was arrested and convicted for taking down a sign in a Pyongyang hotel. He died at the University of Cincinnati medical center less than a week after returning.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that North Korea had asked a USA envoy to sign a pledge agreeing to the payment before it released American college student Otto Warmbier.

That comes from The Washington Post's Anna Fifield.

"I will take him at his word", Trump said.

This story has been corrected to note that Warmbier died in 2017, not previous year.

CORNISH: What has been the response from the Warmbier family?

The United States has a longstanding policy of refusing to pay ransoms, which has been defended by everyone from Jimmy Carter to George W. Bush. "You need to be realistic about North Korea and the nature of that regime".
