"If Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has his way, alongside Katzrin, Ramot and Ramat Magshimim on the Golan Heights, there may someday soon be a community named Kiryat Trump", reports the Jerusalem Post.

When visiting Washington in March for the official signing of US recognition of the Golan Heights as Israel, Netanyahu declared that Israel had never had a better friend in the White House. The region has been a hotbed for battles in the Syrian Civil War.

The Jewish settlement may be named Kiryat Trump in honour of the President who made the controversial move to recognise Israel's claim over the Golan Heights.

The decision reversed 52 years of U.S. policy but Trump said it "should have been done numerous presidents ago".

Israel views the Golan as strategic for fending off Iranian-sponsored terrorists in Syria and Lebanon.

An estimated 20,000 Israelis live in more than 33 Golan Heights settlements, which most of the global community considers illegal.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Mideast War and later annexed it, a moved unrecognized by most in the global community. In remarks last March, Netanyahu compared President Trump to the ancient Persian King Cyrus the Great and to Lord Balfour, who issued the proclamation establishing the state of Israel.

President Donald Trump's name is emblazoned on buildings and real estate around the globe.

Israel annexed 1,200 square kilometres (460 square miles) of the Golan it seized in 1981, a move never recognised by the global community.
