Tesla has been working on a self-driving chip since 2016 and Musk had previously forecast that cars would be fully self-driving by 2018, a target Tesla has missed.

The billionaire tech mogul showed off a Tesla ride-sharing app at the company's Autonomy Day with investors at its Palo Alto, California headquarters on Monday.

These statements from Consumer Reports and PAVE come shortly after Elon Musk's comments at an investors conference this week, in which the CEO stated that he thinks it would be "crazy" to buy any vehicle but a Tesla: "The fundamental message that consumers should be taking today, it is financially insane to buy anything other than a Tesla".

Meanwhile, drivers can stand to earn $30,000 per year by participating in the Tesla Network, Musk said.

Electric vehicle pioneer Tesla revealed a full hand on self-driving technology at its "Autonomy Investor Day" which it held Tuesday morning (Australian time) from its headquarters in Palo Alto, California.

It's expensive and unnecessary, and anyone relying on expensive sensors will be doomed, Musk said.

To ensure that the Tesla robocabs work flawlessly, Musk is placing his faith in the amount of data his company can gather from Tesla vehicles already running on the road today; this data will be used later to improve the software for self-driving taxis.

A spokesman for Harry and Meghan said: "Any future plans for the duke and duchess are speculative at this stage". On Sunday, Buckingham Palace revealed no decisions about Meghan and Harry's future roles have been made.

Musk did casually admit that there might be a few "fender bender" situations, implying that people might get hit if conditions go awry. Tesla's self-driving computer board, which comes with two of its chips for redundancy, still has less than half the processing power of Nvidia's equivalent computer.

Musk is known for making outlandish declarations, making his Tesla-horse comment far from the more freaky statements he has made.

Tesla said Monday it is expecting to deploy self-driving "robotaxis" by 2020 as it unveiled its upgraded technology for driverless vehicles.

He says this means every vehicle Tesla produces from now on will have the necessary hardware to drive itself, and that the feature will be enabled by a future over-the-air update.

"The real world is really weird and messy". Tesla would get 20% to 25% of each fare in the network. And all the cars in Waymo's ride-hailing service still have a human behind the steering wheel ready to take control. "They are great consumer vehicles with really good driver-assist technology".

Chief executive Elon Musk said the new custom-designed chip, which he called the best available, was a significant milestone in self-driving.

The developers of the chip's two processors - which both process and then compare the same data before sending onto the car's actuators - achieved 72 trillion operations per second, well above their goal of 50 trillion operations per second, and at 68Gb per second - healthy but not ridiculous, said Bannon.
