Ex-cricketer Gautam Gambhir joins BJP ahead of LS polls

"I've done whatever I could in cricket and this is a great opportunity to do something for the country". There are reports that he could be the party's candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Delhi.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir on Friday officially became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, settling all speculation that was doing the rounds for some time.

Gautam Gambhir, at the event said, "I am joining this party (BJP) after getting influenced by PM Narendra Modi's vision". Previous year in August, it was reported that the former India opener may contest from the New Delhi assembly seat on a BJP ticket.

As former cricketer Gautam Gambhir joined the BJP today, he was praised by Union Minister Arun Jaitley for not being among the players who "seemed to have turned sympathisers of Pakistan".

Mr. Jaitley noted that Gambhir grew up and studied in Delhi, highlighting his link with the city, and said the party will utilise his talent in a maximum way. "The party has expanded a lot in the past few decades and our speciality is being a cadre-based mass party where we also induct people who have achieved excellence in various fields".

The former left-handed opening batsman resides in Delhi's Rajendra Nagar neighbourhood, now held by the party's Meenakshi Lekhi.

He was recently conferred upon the Padma Shri award. He contested in the 2014 general elections from Tonk-Madhopur constituency in Rajasthan, but lost to the BJP's candidate by nearly 1.35 lakh votes.

He retired from all forms of cricket in December 2018. Post retirement from worldwide cricket, he has been engaged in commentary during important matches.
