MPs to vote on Article 50 extension after rejecting no-deal Brexit

Revocation of Brexit on the horizon

Demonstrators protest outside the Houses of Parliament

The prime minister herself tabled a motion to stop a no-deal Brexit from happening on March 29, while also acknowledging that it was impossible to take it off the table for the future without passing some kind of withdrawal deal.

The fatally-wounded Mrs May, who had originally put forward the proposal to block a no-deal on March 29, was forced into the extraordinary situation of voting against her own bill, after parliament led by Tory Remainers ambushed her by supporting an amendment to make the block permanent.

Previous votes had indicated only a minority of the House of Commons supported crashing out without a deal. On Monday night, May had held a late-night press conference with the European Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, where she triumphantly said the E.U. had agreed to a legally binding change on the "backstop", a key sticking point of the plan among critical lawmakers. The House made its view clear by agreeing the Spelman amendment, I didn't think it was right for me to oppose that.

In a personal blow to the embattled leader, MPs rejected her deal by 391 votes to 242 after 24 hours of frantic diplomacy and a wildly fluctuating pound.

An extension that would require a separate approval from the EU.

Lawmakers will vote shortly after 1900 GMT on a government motion which states that parliament rejects leaving the European Union without a deal on March 29 but notes that leaving without a deal remains the legal default unless a deal is agreed.

British lawmakers have gone on record saying they don't want the leave the European Union without a divorce agreement in place, increasing the odds that Brexit won't take place as planned at the end of the month.

If they reject no-deal, as most Westminster observers expect, a third vote will follow - probably on Thursday - on authorising Mrs May to request an extension of the two-year Article 50 negotiation process.

U.S. Announces Immediate Grounding Of Boeing 737 Max Models
The company had 31 737 MAX 8 planes in its fleet at the end of 2018, and it's expecting to add another 37 MAX 8 jets this year. Mayor Mark Bogen said on Wednesday that he had planned to introduce his proposal to the county commission for a vote.

If no deal was agreed by March 20, "then it is highly likely the European Council at its meeting the following day would require a clear goal for any extension, not least to determine its length, and any extension beyond 30 June 2019 would require the United Kingdom to hold European Parliament elections in May 2019", the motion said. "But if we ever have to use that insurance policy, it can not become a permanent arrangement and it is not the template for our future relationship", said May.

Mrs May said all Conservative MPs would be allowed a free vote on the no-deal Brexit and aides said that she would personally vote against the possibility of crashing out without an agreement.

The Frenchman directly addressed the defeat of Theresa May's Brexit plans in the United Kingdom parliament on Tuesday evening, saying that the result "creates deep uncertainty" for people in the United Kingdom and EU.

But lawmakers will finally be given the chance to vote on Wednesday night to avert such a "no deal" Brexit, and likely delay Britain's exit date, too, in what could be yet another blow to May's government.

Meanwhile in Brussels, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, warned that postponing Brexit won't be straightforward. "Let us, as a House of Commons work now to find a solution", Corbyn said.

"We must take what now seems to be the more hard route but in the end the one that preserves our self-respect", said former foreign minister Boris Johnson, a favorite to succeed May if she steps down.

Today British MPs will hold another debate and vote on whether or not they accept leaving on March 29 with no deal. They voted for the Article 50 Act, and the Withdrawal Act.

Parliament will vote Wednesday on whether to leave the European Union without a deal.
