Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld dies aged 85

Concerns about the German-born designer's condition arose on 22 January 2019, when he missed two of Chanel's haute couture shows in Paris.

Lagerfeld was artistic director at Chanel. We can - and should - also acknowledge the less savoury aspects of his public persona, and use them to help build a better future for an industry about to enter a new, post-Lagerfeld era.

Lagerfeld died after a period of ill-health, according to French media reports.

Lagerfeld had served as creative director of Chanel since 1983 and Fendi since 1965.

Schiffer's fellow catwalk legend Linda Evangelista shared an image of herself and Lagerfeld mid-photoshoot, calling the designer the "great love of [her] life", while Naomi Campbell thanked him "for taking the chance on [a] 16 year old girl from South London and opening my eyes".
