Michelle Obama gets raucous applause at Grammy Awards

Michelle said, "Music helps us share ourselves, our dignity and sorrows, our hopes our joys". The Grammys, Alicia, will "be about the celebration and the power of music".

Former first lady Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night and talked about how music has "always helped me tell my story".

The former First Lady visited the Grammys to support her friends, Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, Jada Pinkett Smith, Lady Gaga who were also present on stage with her. "Music has always been the one place we can all feel truly free". She took to twitter to share a photo with all of them and wrote, "A big part of friendship is showing up for your girls-that's why I was thrilled to be there for the one and only @aliciakeys at the #GRAMMYs".

"Give it up for these magnificent goddesses!" said Keys.

"It reminds me of where I come from but it also reminds me of all the places I can go". Speaking about the different genres of music, the women said that all styles need to be represented and respected.

Plus, Alicia is the first female to host the ceremony in over a decade. Some complained that a black artist should be involved in the tribute, while others said stronger vocalists should perform over Lopez.

Other performers on the broadcast will include Gaga, Morris, Musgraves, Mendes, Carlile, Cardi B, Dolly Parton, Little Big Town, Katy Perry, Mark Ronson, Dan + Shay, H.E.R., Post Malone, Janelle Monáe, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chloe x Halle, Travis Scott and Diana Ross. Yolanda Adams, Fantasia and Andra Day will honour the late Aretha Franklin with a performance.
