The Miami Marlins traded All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto to the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday in exchange for catcher Jorge Alfaro, pitching prospects Sixto Sanchez and Will Stewart, and global bonus pool money.
They have now made four acquisitions this offseason with the other three being Andrew McCutchen to the outfield, Jean Segura at shortstop and David Robertson. Last season, the 27-year-old catcher hit.277 with 21 homers and an.825 OPS in 125 games for Miami.
In a year including two shutouts, Stewart struck out just over seven per nine, but it was his command that impressed, walking just 1.9 per nine innings.
Derek Jeter's destruction of the Marlins is almost finished. He would check in periodically and said the talks with Marlins president of baseball operations Mike Hill didn't "heat up" until Sunday.
Realmuto, an All-Star catcher, was the final piece of real major league value brought over from the previous regime for Jeter & Co.to trade as they tear it down before they hope to build it up.
Alfaro is expected to replace Realmuto as Miami's starting catcher.
More from STORM ERIK overnight and for Saturday morning, clearing east.
The alert remains in place until 5am tomorrow, while a status orange wind warning is in place, for Galway, Mayo and Donegal. The Met Office say Northern Ireland will face "particularly strong" winds, with gusts of 50 to 60mph expected inland.
An idea of how far #Marlins went in this process: when #Yankees earlier this offseason were trying to get Realmuto to spin to #Mets for Syndergaard, Mia requested Gary Sanchez and Miguel Andujar. The 20-year-old right-handed pitcher has reached just the High-A level, but Baseball America lists him at No. 13 among all prospects.
Here's the issue: Sanchez experienced elbow inflammation parts of the last two seasons and was forced to skip the Arizona Fall League after soreness in his collarbone set in. Electric stuff. Three pitch mix.
He was also selected to his first All-Star game and won a Silver Slugger award.
"We have heard outstanding things about J.T. and his work ethic and his makeup and his leadership and the type of teammate he is", Klentak said. He will make $5.9 million in 2019, and he can become a free agent after the 2020 season. That could be the first year of a new deal, or the Phillies could sign Realmuto to a new deal that begins in 2019, essentially voiding his arbitration agreement with the Marlins.
Shortly before the trade was completed, the attendance-challenged Marlins announced a reduction in ticket prices, with seats available this season for as little as $10.
Yelich, last year's NL MVP, fetched a decent haul. They haven't had a winning season since 2009 and haven't been to the playoffs since winning the World Series in 2003.
