White House says tax refunds will go out on time

Trump to visit Mexico border

Donald Trump plans prime-time address and visit to border as government shutdown drags on

Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday claimed the crisis at the southern border is a "bona fide emergency". "We are willing to come to a deal to reopen the government".

But Trump, who campaigned with a promise to build a "big, attractive wall" along the U.S. -Mexico border (and to get Mexico to pay for it), has long turned to mistruths and outright lies in an effort to get the structure funded.

Pence said the president has invited Democratic leadership to the White House to give their response to the president's proposal.

"Nearly 4,000 known or suspected terrorists were apprehended attempting to come into the United States through various means in the previous year", Pence said on ABC's "Good Morning America".

Trump's insistence on $5 billion in funding for the wall lies at the center of the current partial government shutdown, which is entering its third week.

U.S. President Barack Obama listens to questions during a news conference in the Brady Press Briefing Room of the White House in Washington, June 23, 2009.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen told reporters in a briefing on Monday that terrorists had crossed the border into the United States but that information about the number of such incidents was sensitive or classified. Do we need it everywhere? No. Many officials and workers are now openly criticizing the President for holding them hostage in a fight they have nothing to do with. That news prompted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to demand equal air time to respond - something that is only done during State of the Union addresses from presidents.

"It is not a sign of weakness to try to figure out a middle ground, and I think that both sides need to indicate a willingness to listen and to compromise", said US Senator Susan Collins of Maine on NBC.

"Governors stand united in telling the federal government to open the doors of now shuttered agencies while you find a long-term, bipartisan compromise on the issues that now divide Washington", the letter says.

Former President Bill Clinton spokesman Angel Urena said Clinton "never said that", adding that "they've not talked since inauguration". Susan Collins, R-Maine, who said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell should take up bills from the Democratic-led House. As both parties refused to budge in their stance on the wall funding issue, a quarter of federal agencies have been dysfunctional due to a lapse in congressional appropriations since December 22, 2018.

His administration and Congress are deadlocked on funding the barrier.

Mr. Trump is demanding $5.7 billion for border wall funding, while Democrats say they won't fund his wall.

"Yes. They absolutely work", he said.
