Serena Williams scored her second singles win at this year's Hopman Cup, beating Belinda Bencic 4-6 6-4 6-3 in an hour and 40 minutes to level the overall score and set all eyes on the much expected mixed doubles clash.

But Tuesday will mark the first time either of the superstars has ever taken the court in competition with the other. His focus, he told The New York Times, was on the solo matches "because my goal is that she wins the Australian Open", which begins January 14.

It's been billed as the most anticipated match involving men and women since 1973's "Battle of the Sexes" which saw 39-times major victor Billie Jean King beat former men's world No 1 Bobby Riggs in an exhibition match.

"You know I've been training offseason to be ready for Roger, so not sure how I'm going to do but we'll see", Williams said with a laugh after losing to her sister Venus at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

"It was great fun and she is a great champion. You see how determined and focused she is, and I love that about her".

Federer has 20 Major wins which puts him first all-time amongst men, while Williams has 23, making her the second most decorated female tennis player in the history of the game. "I know why they say it now, she has a wonderful serve".

Serena also had not doubt as to the status of the 20 grand slams victor.

Williams has already declared her intent to get a selfie with Federer to post on Instagram.

The 37-year-old sporting superstar was joined by fellow U.S. tennis star Frances Tiafoe, 20, as they arrived for the grand event in Perth's Crown Towers, which took place right in the middle of the 2019 Hopman Cup. The winners of each group play in Saturday's final.

The 37-year-old will face off against rising star Frances Tiafoe in Tuesday's tie against the U.S., before playing Williams in the mixed doubles.

Leading 4-1 in the first set, Williams looked set to be cruising to a comfortable victory until her 21-year-old opponent hit back to win the next five games and take the opener.

"It was definitely a relief". I really enjoyed playing against Serena. "I knew I could play better". In his press conference at the Hopman cup, Roger Federer spoke about his experiences of playing against, and with, quality women tennis players.
