Fred Hoiberg fired as Chicago Bulls coach

What we learned from Jim Boylen's first game as Bulls head...

New Bulls coach had team running suicides in practice

Hoiberg's recipe for success was clear to everyone who followed his team, everyone except those running the Bulls organization.

Associate head coach Jim Boylen was promoted to head coach.

The Bulls fired Fred Hoiberg on Monday after three-plus seasons.

"We believe Jim will be able to effect change", Paxson said. And he handled a lot of hard situations with class.

Boylen said he will add Dean Cooper from the Bulls G league affiliate, Windy City, to the coaching staff. Boylen said he plans to meet with players and coaches individually in IN this evening to discuss their respective roles on the team. "I'm sorry, I know Fred is a laid-back guy and I really respect him for that, but when guys aren't doing what they're supposed to do, you have to get on guys - myself included". The team, which had made the playoffs seven straight seasons before Hoiberg joined them from a successful run at Iowa State, has missed the postseason two of his first three years at the helm.

Last season, the first of a full rebuild following the trade of Butler to the Timberwolves, the Bulls finished 27-55 and drew widespread praise throughout the league for their competitiveness and player development.

"You may not win games, but you can get any of your players to play that way". Bobby Portis (right knee) and Kris Dunn (left knee), who are expected to return within the two weeks, would've allowed Hoiberg to coach the team he had worked with this summer.

However, the decision wasn't necessarily wrong because Hoiberg is the right coach for this team. It was the front office that gave Cristiano Felicio a four-year, $32 million contract after he'd averaged just 4.8 points and 4.7 rebounds a night during the 2016-17 season.

The Bulls reportedly do not intend to hire an assistant to replace Boylen for now.

As a senior that season, Boylen was the runner-up to the late Reggie Lewis, who was drafted by the Boston Celtics, as the conference player of the year.
