The U.S. Congress will delay the government shutdown deadline by about two weeks after the death of former President George H.W. Bush, U.S. media reported Monday.

A similar outpouring is anticipated in Washington this week during the state funeral for Bush, who died late on Friday at his home in Houston.

Christy Smith paused over the weekend to pay her respects to President Bush at a bronze statue of him at a Houston park.

He wrote, "Air Force One has arrived in Houston for what will technically be called "Special Air Mission 41" tomorrow and Wednesday".

Former president George W. Bush, the eldest of the four Bush sons, and his wife Laura, along with brother Neil Bush and his family, will accompany their father's body to Joint Base Andrews outside Washington, said family spokesperson Jim McGrath.

"A handsome day In Texas - 'ceiling and visibility unlimited, ' Mr. President", he wrote - using a phrase that Bush held dear from his time in the Navy, and one used by his family and friends to discreetly spread the news of his death. His body will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda for a public viewing from Monday until Wednesday morning.

The casket will then be transported to the cathedral for the funeral service - the fourth there of a former president.

Trump was expected to meet with Schumer and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, respectively, on Tuesday to discuss the issue, and they have also delayed their talks until next week after Bush's death, CNBC quoted democratic aides as saying.

In 1799, the nation officially had its first state funeral with the death of George Washington, the first president.

The casket will then be flown back to Houston, where the former head of state will lie in repose at St Martin's Episcopal Church - where the Bushes worshipped for decades - until Thursday's funeral service. Cheney was the elder Bush's defence chief and the most influential of the people who served the 41st president to work for the 43rd.
