Why the right is so obsessed with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Ocasio-Cortez’s strategy for Twitter trolls? Don’t get mad, get laughs

After one journalist’s sexist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez critique goes viral, the memes ensue

In an interview with MSNBC, Ocasio-Cortez stated, "I think it's so important that we humanize our government".

Twitter quickly had her back. When conservative pundit Eddie Scarry recently mocked her wardrobe, the internet rallied around her as she swatted him away like a fly.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is in Nancy Pelosi's corner. "[Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] is a flawless example of why the Electoral College is so important", Cardillo tweeted.

In a subsequent tweet, she called for Scarry to apologize.

She has said her background was working class, and that she "relates many of her political positions to it", as her Wikipedia page notes.

Representative-elect Ocasio-Cortez is a rising star of progressive politics, whose way to national prominence began after she defeated veteran congressman Joe Crowley in a Democratic primary. She also shares recipes on her story and easily chatted with 600,000 people while she made loaded macaroni and cheese in an Instant Pot. The Washington Examiner reporter tweeted a picture of Ocasio-Cortez taken from behind, with the following caption: "Hill staffer sent me this pic of Ocasio-Cortez they took just now".

She responded: "Maybe instead of Republicans drooling over every minute of footage of me in slow-mo, waiting to chop up word slips that I correct in real-time, they actually step up enough to make the argument they want to make". She is the youngest woman to ever be elected to Congress, and with that, comes both a lot of scrutiny and many ways for her to prove her haters wrong.

On another occasion, Ocasio-Cortez complained that when she was on Capitol Hill for her orientation as a new lawmaker, people were mistaking her for an intern.

Lee had 11 first-half points , the same amount he had scored in 24 minutes of action all season prior to Saturday. We just want to play ball. "Once we get over these injuries, we'll be able to show what we're about as a team".

Thursday was Ms Ocasio-Cortez's second day in Congress.

When asked by Couric which newspapers and magazines Palin reads, she answered, "I've read majority, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media..."

Her 780,000 followers find her refreshing and real, unlike other politicians.

Her responses have provoked some backtracking from those who criticised her, with Scarry deleting his tweet and then suggesting he had been trying to praise her for looking "elegant ... despite suggestions she's struggled".

Cortez and campaign staffers were speaking with left-leaning activists during a video conference call over the weekend when she urged supporters to run against moderate legislators to promote her key issues; including "Medicare for all" and free college tuition.

"While I was reading this letter that was kind of a released today, my main concern was that there is no vision, there is no common value, there is no goal that is really articulated in this letter aside from we need to change", she said.

But Ocasio-Cortez isn't just a grassroots-funded progressive with universalist policies and impressive comebacks.
