'What's going on?' Facebook chaos as Messenger app crashes worldwide

Users in the US and Europe began reporting that Facebook has been inaccessible since at least 8:15 a.m. ET. "We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible", Facebook tweeted.

Multiple users said that heading to Facebook's home page showed only a "service unavailable" message.

And the company confirmed the outages in an email to the news outlet.

It looks like Facebook and Instagram are now down for some.

Users are reporting error messages, slow load times, and issues connecting to Messenger.

We already have this option on our Facebook app at the time of writing, and from the looks of it, the recorded time spent is strictly based on the device you're using.

Facebook's Messenger app is reportedly down around the world on both desktop and mobile.

Facebook acknowledged via Twitter that it was aware some users could not access its site and other apps it owns, such as Instagram.

Problems appear to have started just before 1pm after a brief outage early this morning.

UPDATE: Nov. 20, 2018, 3:58 p.m. ET Some users still report trouble accessing Facebook and Instagram, nine hours after the outage first began.
