California wildfire rescue crews increase efforts ahead of rain; at least 77 dead

Death toll rises to 76 in California fire with winds ahead

Jerry Brown (D) and Governor-Elect Gavin Newsom (D) on Saturday to visit the Camp Fire that's still raging in Paradise, California.

The blaze that started 8 November all but razed the town of Paradise, population 27,000, and heavily damaged the outlying communities of Magalia and Concow. Newsum's home wasn't destroyed, but it might be months before she can live there again.

Additional rounds of rain are expected in northern California, near the devastating Camp Fire, Thursday and Friday, according to Accuweather Senior Meteorologist Mike Doll.

Last week, Mr. Trump threatened to cut off federal payments to California. Trump beat Hillary Clinton by four percentage points in Butte County in 2016.

Trump also had three politicians in his touring party: congressmen Kevin McCarthy, Ken Calvert and Doug LaMalfa, who represent the California districts of Bakersfield, Corona and Richvale respectively.

"People have to see this to really understand it", he said.

Asked by media if his opinion on climate change had altered, Trump said it had not. We do have to do management, maintenance. We want to keep our journalism open and accessible and be able to keep providing you with news and analyses from the frontlines of Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish World.

"I think that the biggest message and the biggest takeover will be the president saying, 'We're here, ' and thankfully the president's got big shoulders, and I think he's going to go there to offer them up to people that need somebody to lean on", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Friday on the Fox News Channel.

Authorities attribute the high death toll from the blaze - dubbed the "Camp Fire" - partly to the speed with which flames raced through the town with little warning, driven by howling winds and fuelled by drought-affected scrub and trees. "There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor". But to imply the state was to blame for mismanaging the forests was based on a misunderstanding because much of the forest land in California is controlled by the U.S. Forest Service, he said.

Paul Briones, a firefighter from Bakersfield, predicted Trump's visit would be a huge boost to the community, showing "that this on a national level is a priority".

In Northern California, thousands of personnel battled the flames spanning about 230 square miles (600 square kilometers), officials said.

Firefighters were racing against time with a red flag warning issued for Saturday night into Sunday, including winds up to 50mph (80km/h) and low humidity.

Roger Fielding, chief deputy coroner with the Martin County Sheriff's Office, said each site was treated as a crime scene, with every step of recovery documented with photographs. The one thing is that everybody now knows that this is what we have to be doing and there's no question about it.

The fires have destroyed thousands of homes, including several exclusive residences in Malibu, where many celebrities live. But Honea acknowledged the list was "dynamic" and could easily contain duplicate names and unreliable spellings of names.

Several shelters are full and, although authorities say they still have space for everyone, hundreds of people have been camping in tents and cars in the area.

He received a call earlier this week that his father's remains might have been found and now will go to California to provide a DNA sample.

"Well Paradise, what we saw at Paradise is just not acceptable", he said. The fire has also destroyed more than 9,800 homes and, at its height, displaced 52,000 people.

"Paradise is gone. When I drove through it, it's gone", he said. Price had been presumed missing but was tracked down at a shelter. "I mean they're suing him", he said.

As of Friday, the only missing mountain lion was one dubbed P-74, a young male born previous year.
