Khashoggi, 59, a Washington Post columnist and critic of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was last seen entering the kingdom's consulate on October 2 to obtain paperwork for his marriage.

The Cirque put on a show in Saudi Arabia on September 23 to mark the country's national holiday, which was before Khashoggi was killed but during a diplomatic quarrel between Ottawa and Riyadh. The Turkish president added that orders for the killing came from the highest levels of the kingdom.

While navigating that crisis, Mr Abizaid's role in the job will likely include pushing American lines on regional issues such as Yemen, where Washington has called for a ceasefire, and Iran, where US President Donald Trump has advocated a tough line, imposing sanctions on the country that serves as Saudi's prominent regional rival.

There has been a lot of backlash against Saudi Arabia in the past month, but one voice that was all too quiet was the White House.
