Macron, during a visit to the World War I Western Front at Verdun, told Europe 1 radio that in face of a revived threat from Moscow, Europe needed to "defend itself better alone".
"Very insulting, but perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, which the US subsidizes greatly!" tweeted Trump, who is scheduled to meet Macron for bilateral talks on Saturday.
Trump, who is visiting France with his wife Melania for the second time since becoming president, was referring to a call made by Macron in an interview on Tuesday for a "real European army".
The last time the Macrons hosted the Trumps in Paris in July 2017, during Bastille Day celebrations, they whisked them up the Eiffel Tower for a private dinner on the second floor.
Trump's official mission on the trip is to participate in ceremonies marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.
The two leaders are expected to discuss European concerns about Trump's plans to withdraw the USA from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty and renewal of USA sanctions against Iran.
Richard Ferrand, a founding member of Macron's political party, said there was "an aggressive side" to Trump's tweet on Friday night about Macron.
On Saturday morning, the United States president arrived at the Elysee Palace under rainy skies for talks with Macron.

Trump repeatedly lamented that he would have never selected Sessions if he had known the attorney general would recuse himself. House of Representatives - questioned the president's move on Twitter and said that "we will be holding people accountable".
"President Macron of France has just suggested that Europe build its own military in order to protect itself from the US, China and Russian Federation".
"It should be a very handsome period of time, the 100th anniversary of the ending of World War I. We have many countries - the leadership from many countries will be there, especially since they heard the United States will be there".
Trump and first lady Melania Trump will also visit the American cemetery in Belleau, France, on Saturday to pay their respects to USA soldiers who died on French soil during the war.
"I don't think we have anything scheduled in Paris and I'm coming back very quickly", the president said.
"Before returning to Abuja, the President and his delegation will have an interactive session with the Nigerian Community in France, " Adesina said.
Trump and Macron's early relationship was marked by kisses, frequent meetings and marathon power handshakes. But the relationship-building failed to persuade Trump to remain in the global climate change agreement or Iran deals and did nothing to protect France from USA tariffs. The pair are expected to meet during the G-20 meeting later this month in Argentina, and the White House has invited Putin to visit Washington.
