Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has been declared the victor in his fierce campaign against Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke, ending the upstart political star's longshot bid to unseat the widely loathed Republican.

As major news outlets began calling the race for Cruz around 10:30 p.m., the incumbent senator was leading in the low single digits - a much closer margin than most polls had shown in recent months.

Ted Cruz (left) turned back Beto O'Rourke with the help of Donald Trump, his bitter rival in 2016. It was seen as not only a referendum on the Trump presidency, but also issues of gender, race, and violence. "I think we have every indication, based on turnout so far, that we're going to have a very good day tomorrow".

"It's the time for choosing. They're energised", Cruz said on Monday.

All told, he raised a whopping amount - more than US$70 million. "They're filled with rage and hatred for the president".

MSNBC apologized for airing the expletive via local Austin, Texas channel KXAN soon after. That total shattered the U.S. Senate's existing fundraising record and easily surpassed Cruz's fundraising effort, which produced roughly $40 million.

Cruz argued that his opponent's support for gun control and universal health care were too liberal for Texas.

Cruz held off the Democratic rising star to win re-election. A Democrat hasn't won a Texas Senate seat since 1988, and no one from the party has captured any statewide office since 1994, the nation's longest political losing streak.
