Updated: A Florida man has been charged in connection with more than a dozen pipe bombs sent to former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and several other prominent Democrats.

Law enforcement officials told The Associated Press that the devices, containing timers and batteries, were not rigged like booby-trapped package bombs that would explode upon opening.

Sacramento authorities are investigating a suspicious package addressed to California Sen.

The common thread among the bomb targets was obvious: officeholders and others who have criticized Trump and have been harshly criticized in return. The package to Clapper was addressed to him at CNN's Midtown Manhattan address.

Department of Justice spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores confirmed that one person was in custody, and said authorities will hold a press conference about the arrest in Washington, DC, at 2:30pm ET on Friday.

Fox News contributor Rochelle Ritchie said Friday that she reported such a tweet by the suspect earlier this month - only to be told by Twitter that "there was no violation of the Twitter Rules against abusive behavior".

Public records show that Mr Sayoc has been arrested numerous times over the years, including one case in which he was accused of threatening to use a bomb. He has an Aventura, Florida address, and reportedly has ties in NY.

A man who operates a property management office near the Florida auto parts store where the mail bomb suspect parked his van said the suspect didn't resist when armed police officers swarmed and arrested him.

The van was covered in stickers that show President Donald Trump and the presidential seal, among other pictures.

Cesar Sayoc has been charged with five federal crimes including threats against former presidents and faces up to 48 years in prison if found guilty, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said. Records say he threatened to "throw, place, project or discharge" a destructive device.

Court records also show that Sayoc was convicted in the 1990s in Broward County on grand theft and stolen property charges and in 2004 on a felony charge of fraudulent refunds and misdemeanor of tampering with physical evidence.

National Guard troops can perform those same functions, so it was not immediately clear why active-duty forces were sought. That will add to the estimated 2,000 National Guard troops there since April.

In New York City, a security guard alerted the NYPD after spotting a package containing a bomb intended for actor Robert De Niro.

"I heard he was a person that preferred me over others but I did not see that", Mr. Trump said.

Actor Robert De Niro, who has been critical of Mr Trump, former Central Intelligence Agency director John Brennan, and billionaire philanthropist George Soros were also targeted.

The Department of Homeland Security has said there are no links to global terrorism.

On Wednesday, the Secret Service announced that they stopped two bombs in the process of being sent to Hillary Clinton and former President Obama.

The arrest comes just hours after two more suspicious packages were found.

One of the packages was recovered at a South Florida office of Rep.

President Donald Trump said he expected to speak about the investigation at a youth summit on Friday.

Trump, in a tweet Thursday, blamed the "Mainstream Media" for the anger in society.

The first package was detected on Monday at the NY home of billionaire philanthropist and Democrat donor George Soros. He reprised the phrase "fake news" that he notably refrained from uttering on Wednesday at his previous rally in Wisconsin just hours after a mail bomb was delivered to CNN's studios in NY.
