Cooperation with the ongoing investigation may mean a lesser sentence for Manafort depending on whether the government believes he "provided substantial assistance in investigating or prosecuting another person".

Republican lawmakers will next week question Rod Rosenstein, the U.S. Justice Department official who oversees a special counsel's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and links between President Donald Trump's campaign and Moscow, committee chairmen said on Thursday.

Manafort's defense attorney, Kevin Downing, told Judge T.S. Ellis that Manafort's health has suffered as a result of his incarceration.

Manafort was in Virginia federal court for a hearing to determine his sentencing date, which a judge scheduled for February 8.

Manafort also pleaded guilty to related federal charges in Washington, D.C.in a plea agreement to avoid a trial there and in exchange for cooperating with prosecutors.

"I am not willing to go endlessly", he told Mueller's team in court Friday.

Ellis dropped the charges on which the jury had deadlocked, but did so without prejudice, meaning the prosecution could reintroduce them.

Downing was seeking to expedite Manafort's sentencing, suggesting that moving him to the prison where he'd be detained long term would help him with his health condition. Since October a year ago, Goodlatte and Gowdy have been leading an investigation into decisions made by the FBI and Department of Justice in 2016, including those made as part of the FBI's investigation of the Trump campaign.

"Rosenstein interviews with [the Journal] where he says Mueller investigation is 'appropriate and independent.' Translation-there's time for media spin to justify Mueller probe but no time to answer questions from Congress about his statement on recording the President", Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) wrote on Twitter.

Manafort was convicted in federal court in Alexandria on tax- and bank-fraud charges largely unconnected to his work on the Trump campaign. "[He] has some sort of inflammation in his right foot".

In a filing Tuesday, Manafort's lawyers asked Ellis for an order "that he be dressed in a suit for the hearing" on Friday and "all subsequent court appearances".
