Kavanaugh was nominated by Trump in early July to succeed Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy, the court's swing vote on social issues such as abortion, affirmative action and same-sex marriage.

"I look forward eagerly to hearing from both Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh under oath this Thursday morning", he said.

But there are signs he may be losing ground with some key Republicans...

Hanging in the balance is Trump's chance to swing the high court more firmly to the right for a generation. "I don't think because you happen to be a male you're disqualified from listening to the evidence and making a decision based upon the evidence", said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Ford has said Kavanaugh tried removing her clothes and covered her mouth to prevent screams after he pinned her on a bed during a high school party.

"They go into the back room and talk to each other and laugh at what they're getting away with", Trump said.

According to the affidavits, Ford revealed the assault in varying levels of detail between 2002 and Koegler's email in June. She said Thursday's hearing was not about Kavanaugh's behavior as a youth. Top Judiciary Committee staffers held a call with Kavanaugh earlier Tuesday to interview him about the allegation outlined in the New Yorker.

But this does mark a shift from Anita Hill's 1991 allegation of sexual misconduct against then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. Thirty-two percent of men believe Kavanaugh and 28 percent believe Ford.

Donald Trump is in trouble again. The two met at a Mountain View, California, restaurant, where Ford arrived "visibly upset".

The former is available in silver colour options, while the latter comes in black and rose gold colour variants. Samsung has begun teasing the arrival of the Galaxy A7 (2018 ) through Twitter and Instagram accounts in India.

"During our meal, Christine was visibly upset, so I asked her what was going on", Gildo-Mazzon says. "She said that she had been nearly raped by someone who was now a federal judge". Surely she would have reported it to police if the encounter was "as bad as she says", the president said. But he added, "What I know is I've never sexually assaulted anyone", a remarkable assertion for a nominee to the nation's highest court.

Gildo-Mazzon says she contacted Ford's lawyers after reading her account in a Washington Post story published on September 16. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday. Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said Arizona prosecutor Rachel Mitchell will be brought in to handle questioning of Kavanaugh and Ford.

Trump, who himself faced allegations of sexual misconduct during the 2016 presidential campaign, intensified his defense of Kavanaugh in recent days and has pointedly questioned the accounts provided by Ford and Ramirez.

Kavanaugh appeared to get emotional at the end of the interview.

Deborah Ramirez claimed in a New Yorker story published on Sunday that Kavanaugh thrust his genitals in her face in a boozy freshman-year party. A second woman accused Kavanaugh of another assault dating to his first year at Yale University.

The affidavits are not the first challenges to Kavanaugh's denials.

On Monday, Michael Avenatti, a lawyer who represents a porn star claiming to have had an affair with Trump, has said he is also representing a third Kavanaugh accuser, whose identity and story he said would be revealed on Wednesday. "The second accuser doesn't even know- thinks maybe it was him, maybe not". She said they were playing a drinking game at the time and admits there are gaps in her memory of that night.

"The president said a number of times that these individuals should be heard", she also said.

Predictably, that played badly with Democrats.
