Unfortunately for Em and the Lions though, the game didn't go too well as the Sam Darnold-led Jets crushed Detroit 48-17, giving their new head coach Matt Patricia plenty of things to work on ahead of next week's game against the 49ers.
Darnold, the youngest quarterback starter since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, overcame a pick-6 on his first pass attempt. On a 3rd and 2, the rookie signal caller launched a 41-yard touchdown pass to Robby Anderson for his first career touchdown. NY capped the quarter when Isaiah Crowell scored on a 62-yard run with 54 seconds left, making the score 48-17. The New York Jets had gone five years - or 73 games! - without recording a defensive touchdown. But considering his performance in terms of rookie first-game efficiency, Darnold (116.8) fit right in between two Hall of Fame Jets rivals, the Dolphins' Dan Marino (108.7) and the Bills' Jim Kelly (119.8). Crowell's 62-yard burst into the end zone capped off the Jets' third-quarter explosion.
No one in the National Football League is really sure what a Patricia-led team will look like because what he showed in the preseason is not expected to be anything like what he'll do in Week 1 against the Jets.
But the game could not have gotten off to a worse start for Darnold. Stafford's TD pass to Golden Tate tied the score.
Time lapse: The Jets scored 31 points in 12:20.
North Korea's mass games propaganda show
North Korea was also due to hold its first mass games in five years. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Li also handed a signed letter from Xi to Kim.
But Darnold rebounded, as the Jets scored on three of their final four possessions of the first half. He tried to hit Bilal Powell running into space to his left, but Diggs was waiting and pounced on the pass. The key play was a third-and-7 throw that Darnold kept alive by scrambling and finding Enunwa, who made a twisting catch that needed to be reviewed.
The Jets dominated in all phases.
As much as Darnold struggled with turnovers at USC, he had the moxie to overcome them and spark comebacks in a lot of games. The defense (and even the Jets' once-maligned special teams) had his back as promised, taking the ball away five times and yielding just a single touchdown drive to Matthew Stafford, a 10-year veteran QB who routinely posts 4,000-passing yard seasons. Darnold was still holding the ball while talking briefly with Stafford on the field. Mel Farr scored the first touchdown on a screen pass from rookie quarterback Greg Landry to give the Lions a 7-0 lead.
Then they piled it on in the second half.
