The President also said he was not now considering lifting sanctions against Russian Federation but would consider doing so "if they do something that would be good for us".

Russian Federation added more gold reserves in July than any other month this year as it continues to buy up the metal in the face of US sanctions.

In another separate announcement, the Treasury targeted two entities and six vessels for violating the United Nations and U.S. sanctions on North Korea.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters later Tuesday there was strong interest in legislation to punish Moscow, although he said chances were "probably pretty slim" such a measure would come up for a vote before the November 6 congressional elections.

Tuesday's announcement came just days after Washington imposed sanctions on a Russian port service agency as well as Chinese companies for aiding North Korean ships and selling alcohol and tobacco to Pyongyang in breach of US sanctions.
