I haven't played well enough when it has counted, admits Rory McIlroy

Fleetwood played with eventual champion Justin Thomas in his opening two rounds at Quail Hollow previous year and says he learned "a few things" from watching the American on the way to his first major title.

Three different golfers - Patrick Reed, Brooks Koepka and Francesco Molinari - have claimed the first three majors of the year, so golf's fourth and final major is as wide-open as ever. "I was fresh, in form, going to a place where if I worked up the leaderboard I could create a lot of noise".

The 14-time Major victor finished second behind Paul Casey in the Valspar Championship in March and was in contention at Bay Hill the following week before driving out of bounds on the 16th hole of the final round. I knew if had decent tee shots on 17 or 18, they're both birdie chances.
