Dead, Including 9 From Family, After US Boat Capsizes In Storm

Seventeen dead, more missing after storm sinks 'duck boat'

Authorities hold press conference on duck boat capsizing

Nine of the 17 people who who died in a duck boat accident in the USA are from the same family, according to Missouri Governor Mike Parson.

"From what I understand, there was life jackets in the duck (boat)", said Rader. President Trump and the First Lady "extend their deepest sympathies to all those affected by yesterday's boating accident on Table Rock Lake", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement Friday. Mourners lit candles around cars left on the parking lot overnight - believed to belong to the victims.

"Oh my God, those poor people, oh no!" someone repeatedly says in the video as massive waves hit the duck boats, at times almost burying them. He said he and his wife decided not to take the tour because of the weather.

"It was maybe two minutes later, and we actually heard the captain say that the boat flipped or the boat is sinking", Behr said.

Coleman said none of the passengers put on life jackets because the captain said they were not necessary.

Corps of Engineers spokeswoman Laurie Driver says storms tend to blow up quickly in the region of southwestern Missouri and northwestern Arkansas that includes Table Rock, but the agency must rely on people making their own judgments about the safety of setting out on the water.

The boat's captain was among 14 survivors, five of whom were injured.

"All but one of the survivors stated that the canopy was an impediment to their escape", the report said.

The video ends abruptly with the boats still struggling to overcome the waves. The NTSB found that the tugboat operator was distracted by communicating with family members on his cellphone and laptop computer.

Parson committed all state resources to help in the investigation.

All had previously backed the medicine regulation amendment, except for Ms Hoey, who did not vote. She is expected to deliver a key-note address in Belfast on Brexit on Friday.

Rader said the National Transportation Safety Board was traveling to the area today and that it would be in charge of the investigation of the accident with regards to the boat.

Six members of the Storm Family from Dallas went ahead with their plans to ride the boats Friday despite the news from Missouri.

"It shouldn't have been in the water if what happened happened", Pattison told "CBS This Morning" in an interview Friday. But as she and Behr boarded the dinner cruise boat, "the wind really picked up bad and debris was flying everywhere", she said. He said he was about to start CPR when an EMT arrived and took over. At least two children and two adults were still hospitalized Friday afternoon.

A National Weather Service station in Springfield, 40 miles from Branson, issued a severe thunderstorm watch on Thursday evening shortly before the incident, with possible wind speeds of up to 75mph.

The duck boat that sank was one of two still operating during the storm, Rader said.

Emergency workers patrol the area near where the duck boat capsized on Table Rock Lake, Missouri.

Rader said an off-duty sheriff's deputy working security for the boat company helped rescue people after the boat capsized.

Multiple dive teams from a number of law enforcement agencies were assisting in the rescue and recovery effort.

Coleman said she was trapped inside the boat, but managed to swim to shore.

The company that builds ducks, Ride the Ducks International LLC, agreed in 2016 to pay a $1 million (£768,000) fine after one of the vehicles collided with a bus in Seattle, killing five international students. It capsized a Duck Tour amphibious boat and killed 17 people on the land-water craft.
