"This is an issue about what is right and what is wrong", Castro said.

Speaking on ABC's "This Week", Bossert predicted that Trump's executive order ending the family separations will not stand up in court because a judge had ruled in 2015 that even detaining parents and children together is "inhumane".

He sees the issue as crucial ahead of midterm congressional elections in November.

The president pointed out the United States can not accept all of the people who are trying to break into the country. "When somebody comes in, we must immediately, with no Judges or Court Cases, bring them back from where they came", Trump said in a series of two tweets Sunday morning. "Our system is a mockery to good immigration policy and Law and Order", the president tweeted.

As he has in numerous private meetings with his advisers at the White House, Mr. Trump used the session to vent about the nation's immigration laws, calling them "the dumbest laws on immigration in the world". But more importantly, wavering Republicans want Trump to provide political cover for immigration legislation that's despised by hard-right voters. Today, he said US immigration policy was "laughed at all over the world".

The border patrol took 2,342 children from their parents from May 5 to June 9, according to the DHS.

Mr. Trump accused the Democrats of blocking negotiations throughout the week.

Voto Latino and other advocates rallied in the Texas border town of Tornillo to demand the Trump administration fix the humanitarian crisis they say Trump's policies have created. Trump said during a round-table discussion in May.

But the controversy raging over the issue has persuaded many lawmakers they have to look like they are addressing the subject now.

A defiant Trump has, however, said that his "zero tolerance" policy on undocumented immigrants - in which all unlawful border crossings are referred for prosecution - will continue.

Instead, Republican blockades against ending deportations of young immigrants brought to the USA illegally as children were major news earlier this year. Most children come without parents.

Despite that tweet, Trump then continued to talk about immigration in subsequent following tweets. House Republican leaders emphasize provisions in the compromise immigration bill that would address the logistical and legal hurdles that face the Trump administration after the president chose to stick with his "zero-tolerance" policy while trying to ensure that families remain together.

Separately, Customs and Border Protection has reunited 522 children who were separated from their families as part of the "zero tolerance" policy.

"I think it's important that the House be able to show we can take the action", said House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.
